The five balloon setups worth knowing

Nearly every balloon decoration in a Pune home is one of five shapes, and knowing which you want is most of the decision.

• Balloon wall: balloons packed edge to edge over a backdrop, the densest and most photogenic option for a small room.
• Half arch: balloons sweeping from the floor on one side up across a top corner, usually over a frill or shimmer curtain. The most reliable setup in a flat, because it hides whatever the wall actually looks like.
• Full arch: the same idea carried across the whole wall, which needs 150 to 200 balloons and a wider clear space.
• Ceiling cloud: balloons clustered on the ceiling with ribbons hanging down, usually over a cake table or a bed. The only option that changes how the whole room feels.
• Columns and bouquets: free-standing, which is what you need when the venue will not allow anything fixed to its walls.

How many balloons you need

Around 80 to 120 balloons covers a single feature wall of roughly six by seven feet. A full arch across a larger wall takes 150 to 200. Below about 80 the wall starts showing through and the setup reads as thin in photographs. A loose spill of balloons along the floor underneath costs very little, takes minutes, and is the single biggest difference between a setup that looks finished and one that appears to stop in mid-air.

What balloon decoration costs in Pune

Colours that photograph well indoors

• Black and gold — the highest contrast, works against any wall colour, the default for adult birthdays.
• Rose gold and white — soft under warm indoor light, the usual pick for anniversaries and bridal setups.
• Pastel mix — reads young without looking childish, which is why most first birthdays use it.
• Blue and silver — cool-toned, holds up under white LED lighting rather than going grey.
• Red and white — strong in photographs, but it needs warm light or the red shifts towards orange.

Changing the colours costs nothing. Pick a palette on the setup's page or write the colours you want in the booking note, and the decorator matches them.

Air-filled, never helium

We do not use helium or any gas-filled balloons, in any setup, for fire safety. Everything is air-filled and built on frames, curtains or ceiling fixings. That is not a limitation indoors: an air-filled arch holds its shape for the whole evening and usually a day or two afterwards, where a helium setup starts sinking after a few hours. The only thing air-filled balloons cannot do is float untethered, and no home setup needs that.

Where we set up

Everywhere within 30 km of Pune city centre, at one price. That covers Wakad, Hinjewadi, Baner, Balewadi and Bavdhan in the west; Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Wagholi and Koregaon Park in the east; Hadapsar, Magarpatta, NIBM Road, Kondhwa and Undri in the south; Aundh, Pimple Saudagar, Ravet and all of Pimpri-Chinchwad to the north-west; and Kothrud and Camp in the middle. Booking, slots and how late you can leave it

Choose a setup, a date and one of seven 2-hour arrival slots running from 9 in the morning to 11 at night, and send the booking request. There is no online payment — we call back to confirm that a decorator is free and to confirm the final amount. Two days ahead is comfortable, one day is fine, and same-day slots close three hours before they start.

Setup itself takes 45 minutes to two hours depending on the package, inside the slot you picked. Clear about two metres of the wall beforehand and decide where the cake table goes — the backdrop is centred on it.
